Last night after pressing some shirts I watched PBS’ Independent Lens as I was cleaning up my work space. They were playing film maker Gary Hustwit’s second installment of his trilogy on design, Objectified. From their site…

“OBJECTIFIED encourages us to stop and notice our surroundings and to think critically about creativity and consumption. Who makes all these objects, and why do they look and feel the way they do? How can good design make these things—and by extension our lives—better? What about the environment and the social and environmental costs associated with global manufacturing and planned obsolescence?”

I thought it was great. It really gave me some perspective on some of the lesser known aspects of design and also just how neurotic designers are. They had a great section on Dieter Rams. He birthed a lot of the style currently being used by Apple with his designs as the head of brAun from the 60′s til the 90′s. His 10 principles for good design should be memorized by design students like Biggie’s 10 crack commandments are memorized by every hipster/suburban white kid. Definitely set your fancy tivo for this one, I caught it old school on my bunny ears (yes people still have those).
